| ESSENCE OF EQUUS
|Imagine, an equine head study sculpted thousands of years ago. A violent volcanic eruption and earthquake send the bronze plunging to the bottom of the Mediterranean Sea. Time and the elements have erased all but the "Essence of Equus."|

Associated with agricultural landscapes, the enigmatic hare is deeply rooted in European & British culture & folklore. Revered as a symbol of fertility, the hare was the sacred beast of Estre, a Saxon goddess from whose name Easter is derived.
During Spring, when crops are low, bucks can be seen in the early morning frantically chasing & biting as they seek to establish dominence over rival males. The females may repel unwelcome advances by "boxing off" the male. This eccentric madcap behavior is often referred to as "Mad March Hares."
Hares have not fared well in modern agriculture. Intensive farming has seen alarming declines in many countries. In Britain, hares declined to a 20th of estimated population at around 800,000.
In Cheshire, northwest England, the population has been estimated by the Cheshire Brown Hare Group at around 6,100. A national conservation action plan is currently being developed.
